INTRODUCTION

Centrifugal pumps are classified as
Rotodynamic type of pumps in which a dynamic pressure is developed which enables the lifting of liquids from a lower to a higher level. The basic principle on which a centrifugal pump works is that when a certain mass of liquid is made to rotate by an external force, it is thrown away from the central axis of rotation and a centrifugal head is impressed which enables it to rise to a higher level. Now if more liquid is constantly made available at the centre of rotation, a continuous supply of liquid at a higher level may be ensured. Since in these pumps the lifting of the liquid is due to centrifugal action, these pumps are called 'centrifugal pumps'. In addition to the centrifugal action, as the liquid passes through the revolving wheel or impeller, its angular momentum changes, which also results in increasing the pressure of the liquid. As such centrifugal pumps behave quite differently from positive displacement pumps. A centrifugal pump does not push the liquid as in the case of a positive displacement pump, but it modifies the hydraulic gradient such that the liquid is lifted to a higher level.

INTRODUCTION

Where pumping requirement are variable it is often more economical to for two pumps in series or parallel operation rather then a single larger one which may be underutilized for much of
the time. In the former arrangement one pump may be switched off when demand is low, thereby operating at the higher efficiency and also enabling maintenance to be done on the idle
unit.
Two identical pumps operated in parallel approximately double the discharge while preserving the same head. Likewise, when two identical pumps are connected in series. The discharge rate is same as that from one pump but the head is approximately doubled.
Two centrifugal pumps of identical design are driven by two D. C. Motors. The pumps may be run together or single by simply disconnecting the appropriate link. The pumps and drive assembly are mounted above a sump tank from which water is drawn by each pump through vertical section pipes. The common delivery pipe has a flow control valve. Bourdon type pressure gauges are provided for pressure measurement in the suction and delivery sides of the pumps. Pump speed is measured by a digital tachometer. The whole assembly is mounted on a study steel frame.
