HTL-01 INTRODUCTION “EEE” Thermal Conductivity of Insulating Powder apparatus is designed to determine thermal conductivity of insulating powders, by assuming unidirectional radial heat conduction across the powder. The apparatus consists of two thin walled concentric copper spheres. The inner sphere houses Nichrome heating coil and insulating powder is packed between two spheres. Chromel Alumel Thermocouples are embedded on the spheres to measure the temperature at various positions. FEATURES 1. Sphere in Sphere arrangement for radial unidirectional heat flow. 2. Ten thermocouples to measure surface temperatures of spheres. 3. Digital Temperature Indicator. RANGE OF EXPERIMENTS 1. Determination of thermal conductivity of insulating powder. 2. INSTRUCTION MANUAL A manual is supplied which gives details of the apparatus and procedure of experiments along with sample calculations. SERVICES REQUIRED AC. 230 V Single phase stabilised supply with earthing connection. Space : 0.5 m x 0.5 m approximately at working height. HTL-02 DESCRIPTION The apparatus consists of a metal bar whose one end is heated by an electric heater & the other end is kept in a cooling water chamber, which acts as heat sink. The test section, i.e. middle portion of bar is provided with thermocouples. Test section is well insulated to minimise radial heat loss. EXPERIMENTATION Determination of temperature distribution along the length of given bar. Determination of thermal conductivity of given bar at different temperatures Determination of thermal conductivity of any metal bar other than the supplied one by proper fitting of bar in the unit.
